Info
[Revised on 30th May 2008]
There is a reasonable chance you have come to this page because you are interested in modelling for me. Below is some information that I hope you will find helpful. I have kept it as simple as possible. If you have any further questions, please get in touch via the ‘contact’ page.
1 - Age:
If you are 18 or over (and have proof of ID/age):
Feel free to get in touch directly using the contact page.
PLEASE NOTE: I will only arrange meetings/shoots directly with models who are 18 years of age or older.
2 - Payment:
I usually work with models on a TFP/TFCD (Time for Photos/Time for CD of images) basis. In addition to e-mailed photos/CD (if required), I am prepared to offer prints at cost: roughly £2.50 for an A4 print though other sizes are available.
TFP models will receive the following:
A set of 12 images in two sizes (600 pixel and 1000 pixel) that feature a signature in one corner.
These will be referred to as Signature Sets. Here is the first one as an example sized to 600 pixels:
Sakura SS01 - Super Saturation!
This change was introduced because I am now concentrating on more artistic interpretations and it takes me a long time to process some of these images. Since the signature will also feature the model's name ('Sakura' in the example above), it will help to promote the model unlike a copyright notice that only promotes the photographer.
I tend to promte models whenever I can and drop their names into any available photography related conversation whether on or off-line.
I am not a professional or commercial photographer and do not earn any money from photography. I do not charge models for my time and do not pay modelling fees.
If I invite you to participate in a special project or exhibition, there may be additional benefits such as a percentage of any future sales/profits, and/or items of clothing.
3 - Test Shoots and other shoots:
The first shoot I do with a new model is a test shoot. It allows me to assess your potential with regards the creative work I plan to do, and for both of us to make sure we get on! Test shoots are nearly always spontaneous with no real agenda other than experimentation. Like all the shoots I do, they are supposed to be fun.
To be honest, I like to keep all the shoots I do as informal and as relaxed as possible. I like both spontaneity and serendipity so do not expect a lot of planning or direction. I tend to try and avoid static poses but I can help you out if you are really stuck. I do not expect a performance, unless you are a performer, and I am perfectly happy to take casual and more candid photos so there is no pressure on you at all.
4 - Model release:
I may require you to sign, at least, a limited model release. I will not ask you to sign it until after you have seen and approved the photos. The wording of the release may be modified to suit individual circumstances.
5 - Use:
For the most part I will use the photos I work on for self promotion on my website, on profiles I maintain on sites such as Model Mayhem and MySpace, and for peer review on sites such as ePhotozine. The best photos will be printed and framed for exhibition. Some photos may end up in books and/or magazines. If I have your contact details, I will keep you informed about this.
Not all the photos I work on will be posted on-line. Some will be for exhibition only.
6 - Nudity:
Not expected but if you are interested in this area of work or if you would like to give it a try, please let me know.
PLEASE NOTE: I do not, and will not, take nude/semi-nude photographs of anyone under the age of 18. This is non-negotiable.
7 - Projects:
I am working towards a number of creative projects. These include exhibitions of framed prints, calendar, book and web-based projects. I do not require appplications for these. If I think you are suitable, I will tell you after I have worked with you, and will ask you if you are interested in being involved in such a project.
If you have any questions that are not answered by this page, please get in touch via the contact page.
About me:
I have been into photography since 1982 and did one year of the City & Guild's photography course. I passed but did not feel there was any point in taking it further.
In 2000 my step-daughter, Victoria wanted to be a model so I took some photos of her. Victoria left home in 2001 and I spent the next 5 years working and re-working the photos I took of her. This was a slightly unusual way to learn but it gave me a greater artistic sensibility than I think I would have developed otherwise. I uploaded some of my favourites to my portfolio on ePhotozine. During that time I also learned HTML and developed three websites. I did a couple of photoshoots for charity and a few studio shoots at a local camera club but found the camera club mentality far too restrictive.
In 2006 I joined an art group and rented a studio from them, having decided it was time to get more serious about my photography. At the same time I was introduced to a young lady called Liv who agreed to model for me. This was a fortuitous confluence of events and as a result my photos came to the attention of a model called Ruby who contacted me about doing some shoots with her. Ruby in turn connected me to her friends and to other models by encouraging me to join Model Mayhem, Net-Model and MySpace. I am greatly indebted to her.
Throughout 2007 I concentrated on doing more shoots and getting a better sense of the direction I wanted to take. Unfortunately, the studio proved unsuitable, and the art group even more frustrating than the camera club, so I gave up both and had a re-think. I also bought a new camera with the money I saved :-)
I am (still) planning to set up a permanent studio at home. This should be ready by the end of 2008 (a year later than hoped) and I will then be focussing on more studio-based projects with just a small group of models.
I would like to establish a career as an artist/fine art photographer working on book projects and exhibitions but that is going to take a few more years at least.

In addition to art/photography I am a full-time registered carer and a writer of (mostly) sci-fi/fantasy fiction.
