Showcase Book Project

This project is focused on the production of a hardcover 'coffee-table' book of fine-art images. Publication is scheduled for Autumn 2010 and I intend to use the services of a UK printer. The latter stages of the book's production, and the publication/post-publication schedule will be supported by a number of exhibitions in London, Brighton and elsewhere. Framed limited edition prints will be available for sale.

The images will mostly be nudes. I will explain my reasons for this over the coming weeks. It is something that is easier to explain by showing rather than telling so expect a few links and examples to be added to this page.

The people I work with will be photographed within interior sets, studio and domestic environments and natural and urban landscapes. Locations will be selected from around the UK and possibly mainland Europe.

The project is currently in pre-production. I am working out a format for the book so I know how big it will be and how much space I will have. Page make-up is not exactly new to me but I am far from being an expert. I am also sketching out plans for some of the shots I know I want to include.

Models will be chosen in stages as the project progresses and I will be posting casting calls on sites such as Model Mayhem. If you are interested in modelling for this project and are at least 18 years of age, please get in touch. I am happy to consider anyone.

The first shoots for the project should take place in July 2008. The shooting schedule for this project will run from Summer 2008 to Spring 2010.

A new portfolio group has been added and this will feature a few sample images from each SBP shoot. This group will not replace the Showcase group. Instead it will be included within the rotating stack of groups below it.

This is a very personal project...

In the book Women by Women, there is a quote from photograper Elisa Lazo de Valdez ( www.visioluxus.com ) that goes like this: "The models discover that working with a woman photographer is quite a different experience than working with a man. They are more relaxed and open, naturally sensual and more prone to laugh and enjoy themselves. There is no undercurrent of sexual tension and the results are wonderful."

Over the past couple of years, I have been largely motivated by that quote. As a result, one of the aims of this project is to find a way to remove as much tension as possible so that I can photograph women the way a woman might. That, to my mind, is by far the greatest challenge facing me. I think some contrast would be necessary but I'm not too sure at this stage how to introduce it.

Serious and sensible comments are welcome via the Contact page.

To be continued...

Consider this:

Any photographer could publish a book of their work. So why don't they? Is it through a lack of talent? No. I'm hardly the most talented photographer on the planet. A lack of confidence? No. My confidence levels are usually skidding somewhere along the bottom of a sub-terranean cavern. A lack of finances, then? No. You can produce a book for next to nothing using print on demand.

The reasons why most photographers do not produce books are as follows:

1 - They don't want to.
2 - er...see reason 1

Is that it? Yep. If you want to do something, you find a way to do it.

I have a nice collection of books by other photographers. I love books. I love photography. So I am going to produce a book of my photography - not the work I have already done but new work done especially for the book. Producing a book is the perfect way to combine two things that I love. It is a way for me to express myself. It is a way for me to say thank you to the people that I work with on the project that I hope will stand the test of time.
